About the role
## About OptQC
OptQC is a deep-tech startup spun out of the University of Tokyo, founded with the mission of achieving the social implementation and commercialization of "optical quantum computers."
While multiple modalities exist in the quantum computing landscape, we focus on the optical quantum approach. We are confident that this method is the most suitable for practical application and widespread adoption due to its inherent scalability and seamless integration with optical communications. Through continuous research and development, we aim to balance energy efficiency with high computing power, overcome the limits of human information processing, and contribute to a sustainable society.

## Background
The Architecture Unit plays a broad role in the design of optical quantum computers—ranging from conceptual design and evaluation of future systems to detailed design based on existing technologies. To accelerate our R&D toward realizing optical quantum computing, we are currently strengthening our team.
In this role, we are seeking high-potential, growth-oriented individuals who have a strong interest in optical quantum information and the ambition to eventually lead world-class, cutting-edge technology from the high-level architecture layer.
Particularly on the experimental side, research focusing on practical aspects such as scalable design and fault-tolerant technology design is required.

## Key Responsibilities
The R&D (Research & Development) department is the core of our business growth and the source of our competitive advantage. In this position, you will conduct foundational research (both experimental and theoretical) aimed at realizing a fault-tolerant universal optical quantum computer. Your primary responsibility will be the design and demonstration experiments related to the overall architecture of optical quantum computers.

More specifically, you will support research on photonic quantum computing architectures. Your responsibilities will include:

- Developing system configurations encompassing quantum circuits, optical systems, and control systems, and conducting experiments to implement and validate them.
- Investigating, developing, and evaluating novel architecture concepts, and conducting experiments to implement and validate them.
- Working with theoritical teams to define system requirements and specifications.
- Providing technical analysis and design support for R&D projects.
- Evaluating the performance of quantum computing systems and identifying system bottlenecks.
- Participating in design reviews and technical discussions, and preparing technical documentation within the team.

Depending on your interests and preferences, you may also have opportunities to take the lead on some of these activities.

After joining the company, you will participate in actual development projects while receiving guidance from the CTO and senior team members. You will gradually take on greater responsibility for system design as you gain experience.

## The Role & Impact
In this role, you will directly contribute to the realization of practical optical quantum computers—a breakthrough attracting global attention—from the high-level perspective of system architecture design.
Furthermore, because you will be responsible for overall system design, you can engage with various internal R&D processes, allowing you to gain deep expertise in state-of-the-art knowledge and technologies.
- A background in physics, applied physics, physical engineering, or a related field, with a master’s degree or higher
- Experience in numerical computation, data analysis, and simulation using Python or similar tools
- Research experience in optics, lasers, quantum optics, quantum mechanics, or related fields
- Theoretical collaborating with theoretical teams
- Experience writing papers as a first author.
- Experience in both experimental and theoretical research.
- Conversational proficiency in Japanese.
- Experience working at a quantum computing-related company.
- Education: Ph.D. holder, or research experience in a Ph.D. program
- Language Skills: English proficiency at a level sufficient for smooth communication with other researchers and quantum computing experts
- Individuals who thrive on R&D with no predefined answers
- Individuals who can iteratively formulate and validate hypotheses in immature technology fields
- Individuals eager to venture beyond their primary field of expertise
- Individuals with a genuine passion for building optical quantum computers
- Individuals who are eager to put their ideas to meaningful use in society through real optical quantum computers
["15th Floor, IT tower TOKYO, 3-28-13 Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo 171-0021, Japan
- Document Screening *Please submit a publication list
- Interview (2–3 rounds) *Includes a research / work presentation
- Offer Meeting

[Additional Information]
- Interviews are generally conducted online; however, candidates will be required to visit our office at least once.
- Please consult with us if this is difficult for you.
- Transportation expenses will be reimbursed for candidates traveling from distant locations (subject to company regulations).
- Reference checks may be requested during the selection process.
- The selection process and the number of interview rounds are subject to change.
